Finding The Right Career For You

When you are trying to find the right career for you – you’re at that age in the final years of school or university when you really have to start making some serious decisions about *what you want to do with your life*. Unfortunately for some people it’s not an easy choice, it can be a big decision that sometimes isn’t easy to make. Maybe you are thinking of changing your career path completely? You feel you have gone as far as you can in your current job, there isn’t any chance of promotion, or you are just looking for a change.

Now you are sitting here thinking of a new career or a change of careers, but – where do you start? Perhaps the industry you are in is looking shaky and you’re thinking of getting out now rather than waiting till its too late and losing your job completely. It doesn’t matter if you are making the big leap from school or university into a new career, or looking for something new and different, you still have to find out what that new career path may be, you need the courage to make a change, perhaps having to learn new skills, looking at all the options available to you and sorting out what your strengths or goals may be.

So, how do you actually go about finding meaningful work in today’s world? Many of us have adhered to the belief that the reason we work is to bring home enough money so we can live. We *work to live* rather than *live to work*. While there are many well paying jobs that allow us to do that is it really important? If you are not happy with your job, the industry you are in or the work you are doing, no matter WHAT the pay it can play havoc with both your mental and physical health. If you’re feeling depressed, anxious, frustrated, or in general not happy at home because you have to go back to work tomorrow and you are not finding your work rewarding or meaningful it’s time to change.

Sit down and work out why you are unhappy in your present job, what are the things getting you down, is it the people, the work load, the commute, and what are the things that do make you happy? Make a list of what it is you like to do, is there are career or job out there that ticks some or all of those boxes. If you are stuck in a job with no advancements; that you find unrewarding or boring it’s time to change. You will find a change of career into a sector or job you feel passionate about, will make you much happier.

No matter if you are looking to enter to work force for the first time, re-enter the workforce, or you are looking for a change of career – the first step is to finding a fulfilling career is to uncover the activities that bring you joy and most importantly get you excited. A happy worker is a better worker.
