Normally rates are charged per sqm or per item depending what the nature of job is.

1. Set a realistic budget and do not go with the cheapest quotes. 2. Use cost effective materials to your desire but also not the cheapest as this can cause short life spans and dissatisfying results that can turn into a redo of job and extra costs. 3. Make sure the company you use are legitimate and ask for registration numbers as using the wrong company can result in a lost.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

Where the property is. Is there an approved building plan. If not one will have to be drawn and submitted for approval. What the nature of the job is, What the client have in mind and if it is possible Take measurements and pictures.
